Orthodontics Retainers

Retainers are custom-made appliances that are used to maintain your orthodontic results. Once your treatment is finished, you’ll need to wear a retainer to keep your smile straight. A retainer also helps ensure your smile as you age, as our teeth tend to shift as we get older. There are three main types of retainers used by orthodontists:

  • Hawley retainers are the retainer most people think of when they think of retainers. They consist of metal wire that goes around the teeth and a plastic body that sits on the palate.
  • Clear retainers look similar to clear aligners and fit snugly over the teeth. They are more aesthetically pleasing than Hawley retainers but are not as durable.
  • Fixed retainers are bonded directly to the back of the front teeth. These are used in patients with a high probability of relapse and can only be removed by an orthodontist.

Our orthodontist retention will help you determine whether you need a retainer after your orthodontic treatment. For more information, we welcome you to call us today!
